City of God - Demonic Horror Investigation TTRPG
A downloadable tabletop rpg
In the end, only your faith will protect you.
City of God is a demonic horror investigation TTRPG which places you in the role of an exorcist that is investigating demonic spirits in the world of the religious Dark Ages. You are powerless against these immortal beings, and powerless to the anarchy and violence of the world around you. Yet, it is your duty, enshrined by the Holy testaments of God, to banish these demons to their hellish domain, and restore God's light upon the Earth.
This is not a game for the powerful; but for the witty demonologist who is willing to put their soul on the line in order to free their brothers and sisters from the bonds of evil and sin.
The game takes inspiration from staple investigation and horror tabletop games such as Kids on Bikes and Ten Candles, but grounds supernatural horror in real history. The world of the Dark Ages ~(400-600 A.D.) is a quagmire of human devastation, sin, and misery. There is never-ending conflict between foreign barbarians vying for power, corrupt bureaucrats serving the ruins of the old Roman order, and leaders of the Christian faith crucifying one another to claim themselves leaders over the faithful.
For the players, the lines of mortal evil will blur with that of the demonic and supernatural, and they will be forced to question with which evils they must treat with in order to defeat another.
The core antagonists of City of God are demons, or demonic entities. These demons will leave clues about their identity and weaknesses which the missionaries must decipher and apply to their investigation in order to defeat them. This will inevitably send them down a treacherous path of horror and despair, where one can never truly be sure what is and is not the domain of the demon in question.
Players pick from six different classes, and four different religious creeds, in order to define their character. These roleplaying traits they create are not merely descriptive; the player is incentivised to play into the personality of their religion in order to gain points. Through conducting holy (or unholy) acts, players can use these points to conduct special abilities to either aid their investigation, or help destroy the presence of demonic evil in the world. Among these special abilities are inquisitions, which provide unique opportunities for creative ways to gather information, and prayers, which are incantations that weaken and banish demonic spirits.
Discovering the Achilles heel of a demonic spirit will allow the players to destroy the spirit, and free the world of its evil. This is systematised through the introduction of abilities, manifestations, and banes, which are special rules created by a game master to define the characteristics of the demon.
